1. Lightweight Dresses and Breathable Clothing
The key for Washington DC summer clothes is to focus on lightweight, breathable fabrics (think cotton, linen, and moisture-wicking materials) and versatile pieces that can take you day to night. 2. Comfortable Walking Shoes
For those looking at what shoes to wear for DC in summer, it is important to note that DC is a walking city! So I always pack comfortable sneakers and sandals. I suggest packing a pair of waterproof sandals like Teva or Birkenstocks, especially for those summer thunderstorms.
3. Sunscreen and Sunglasses
The sun can be brutal in DC summer, so I always pack sunscreen. I also suggest bringing sunglasses- I prefer polarized sunglasses if exploring near the Potomac! Don’t forget these items on your DC packing list for summer.
4. Mini Travel Umbrella or Packable Rain Jacket
Sudden thunderstorms are common during summer in DC, so a lightweight rain jacket or small travel umbrella is a must if you plan on being outdoors and don’t want to get soaked!
5. Crossbody Bag and Portable Fan
A hands-free bag is perfect for DC. I love being hands-free while still being able to have my phone, chargers, etc nearby! For those hot days, a portable fan is a lifesaver and takes up almost no room in your luggage!
